English Scholarships
The English Department offers a variety of scholarships that are awarded every spring semester. Please read the descriptions of each scholarship below to see if you are eligible to apply for one or more scholarships.
Scholarships
Genice Everhart Memorial Scholarship ($500)
A memorial to Genice Everhart, a beloved English/E.S.L. instructor who passed away suddenly, was established in 2011. The long-term commitment to this scholarship stems from the dedicated fundraising of English faculty, augmented by contributions of friends and family of Genice Everhart.
Scholarship Criteria:
- Successful completion of at least one of the following courses at ELAC within the last year: E.S.L. 3A, E.S.L. 4A, E.S.L. 5A; AND successful completion of at least one of the following courses at ELAC within the last year: E.S.L. 3B, E.S.L. 3C, E.S.L. 4B, E.S.L. 4C, E.S.L. 5B, E.S.L. 5C
- Write a brief essay (200-300 words) describing your educational and career goals along with any challenges overcome to pursue a higher education. Awarded each Spring semester.
Margie Mentel Memorial Scholarship ($500)
Ms. Mentel was a beloved English literature teacher who taught at ELAC in the 1990s. Her husband established a memorial scholarship, and there is continued support from current faculty / former students.
Scholarship Criteria:
- English major or minor
- Completion of at least one 200-level English course at ELAC within the last year with a grade of B or higher
- Write a brief essay (200-300 words) on why you have chosen English as your major or minor and how it will help you in the future. Awarded each Spring semester.
Opportunity to Succeed Scholarship ($500)
Faculty members of the English department have contributed funds to honor an outstanding student who has excelled in developmental English courses. This scholarship is open to all students regardless of their legal residency status.
Scholarship Criteria:
- Successful completion of English 101Z within the last year
- Write a brief essay (200-300 words) describing your educational and career goals along with any challenges overcome to pursue a higher education. Awarded end of each Spring semester.
Outstanding Achievement in English Scholarship ($500)
Faculty members of the English department have contributed funds to honor an outstanding student who has excelled in transfer-level English courses. This scholarship is open to all students regardless of their legal residency status.
Scholarship Criteria:
- Completion of at least one of the following courses at ELAC within the last year with a grade of B or higher: English 101, English 102, English 103
- Write a brief essay (200-300 words) describing your educational and career goals along with any challenges overcome to pursue a higher education. Awarded end of each Spring semester.
Outstanding Achievement in E.S.L. Scholarship ($500)
Faculty members of the English department have contributed funds to honor an outstanding student who has excelled in E.S.L. courses. This scholarship is open to all students regardless of their legal residency status.
Scholarship Criteria:
- Successful completion of at least one of the following courses at ELAC within the last year: E.S.L. 6A, E.S.L. 8, E.S.L. 110; AND successful completion of at least one of the following courses at ELAC within the previous year: E.S.L. 6B, E.S.L. 6C, E.S.L. 7B, E.S.L. 32, E.S.L. 94
- Write a brief essay (200-300 words) describing your educational and career goals along with any challenges overcome to pursue a higher education. Awarded each Spring semester.
Outstanding Achievement in Reading Scholarship ($500)
Faculty members of the English department have contributed funds to honor an outstanding student who has excelled in Reading courses. This scholarship is open to all students regardless of their legal residency status.
Scholarship Criteria:
- Successful completion of at least one of the following courses at ELAC within the last year: Reading 98, Reading 101
- Write a brief essay (200-300 words) describing what skills you learned in your Reading course(s) that you would use in the remainder of your college career. Awarded each Spring semester.
