Social Sciences Department
Welcome to the Social Sciences Department at ELAC
"I have always been fascinated with people, their behavior, and how people learn. That propelled my interest in the study of society and education. I love the social sciences and my students. I am also very proud of the teaching faculty in our department who are all so active and student-centered. I feel that the social sciences has helped me understand the social world around me, and myself better."
-Dr. Marcel Morales, Department Chair and Professor of Sociology
Social sciences explore the many facets of human interaction, including our relationship with the environment. Through studying diverse disciplines like African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology, Social Work and Human Services, and Women and Gender Studies students gain a comprehensive understanding of the world around them. This interdisciplinary approach fosters critical thinking and equips students with the skills needed to tackle complex global challenges.
While social sciences provide a broad foundation, they also lay the groundwork for various career paths. Graduates often pursue fields that value strong communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills, such as education, social work, research, law, and public policy. These roles require broad knowledge and adaptability, which are fostered by a social science education.
