MONTEREY PARK, CA – East Los Angeles College (ELAC) proudly announces that its Respiratory  Therapy (RT) students have emerged victorious at the South Coast Region Sputum Bowl, a prestigious "battle of the brains" competition hosted by the California Society for Respiratory Care (CSRC). RT Students Julius Calderon-Dominguez, Jonathan Munoz, Eulises Perez, Graciela Solis, and Mark Pacquaio competed against strong teams from Ventura, Los Angeles, and Orange counties, ELAC students showcased exceptional knowledge, clinical skills, and professionalism—qualities that define excellence in respiratory care.

This achievement underscores the students' unwavering dedication, tireless effort, and countless hours of preparation. It also highlights the invaluable mentorship provided by ELAC's dedicated faculty and the supportive resources of our institution. More than just a victory in competition, this accomplishment affirms that ELAC students are prepared to become leaders and highly skilled clinicians in the respiratory therapy profession.

Following their regional success, ELAC's team represented the South Coast Region at the statewide Sputum Bowl competition during the California Society for Respiratory Care Annual Conference held March 11-13, 2025 in Temecula, CA. Competing against top RT student teams from across California, our students once again demonstrated their exemplary capabilities.

“On behalf of the Faculty and Students of the ELAC Respiratory Therapy (RT) Program, I couldn’t be prouder of our students for their incredible achievement in winning the Sputum Bowl for the South Coast Region of the California Society for Respiratory Care (CSRC). Their hard work, countless hours of study, and unwavering dedication to the field of respiratory therapy have truly paid off. This victory is a testament to their passion for learning and commitment to excellence. They have represented our college and the future of our profession with outstanding knowledge and teamwork,” said RT Program Director Allan Gonzales.

Although our respiratory therapy students did not take home the championship at the state-level competition they gave it their all, showcasing their knowledge and teamwork against some of the best in the state. This dedication was inspired by the guidance of RT faculty, Mr. David Citizen (Coach) and Mr. Mel Welch.
