Monterey Park, CA — East Los Angeles College (ELAC) is proud to be named as a Fulbright Hispanic-Serving Institution (HIS) Leader for 2024. The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) has recognized ELAC as one of 50 select HSIs for their strong engagement with the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government's flagship international academic exchange program.

ELAC has demonstrated noteworthy support for Fulbright exchange participants and encouraged administrators, faculty, and students to engage with Fulbright on campus. This recognition also highlights ELAC's strength as a destination for international students and scholars.

The 50 recognized colleges and universities include seven associate colleges, five baccalaureate colleges and special focus institutions, 10 master's colleges and universities, and 28 doctoral universities. The Fulbright HSI Leaders were announced during the International Plenary Session of the annual conference of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU).

ELAC President Alberto J. Roman expressed his pride in the institution's achievement: "Being named a Fulbright HSI Leader is a testament to ELAC's commitment to fostering global perspectives and providing international opportunities for our diverse student body. This recognition reinforces our dedication to creating a campus environment that values cultural exchange and prepares our students for success in an increasingly interconnected world."

ELAC has a history of engagement with the Fulbright Program, including hosting noted Irish writer and journalism professor Tom Felle as a Scholar-in-Residence (SIR) in the past academic year. During his academic year at ELAC, over 1,500 students, staff, and community members participated in discussions, lectures, and workshops hosted by the scholar, significantly impacting the campus community.

The Fulbright Program has provided over 400,000 talented and accomplished individuals with the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research abroad since its founding in 1946. Fulbrighters exchange ideas, build people-to-people connections, and work to address complex global challenges.

ELAC's recognition as a Fulbright HSI Leader underscores its role in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility within international education. The college continues to support and encourage its students and faculty to participate in Fulbright opportunities, enriching both the campus and the broader community through global engagement and cultural exchange
