Mendez et al. v. Westminster et al: Paving the Path to Educational Justice and Racial Equality is an upcoming panel discussion and documentary screening event scheduled for October 17, 2024, from 12:00pm to 1:15pm at the S2 Recital Hall. This town hall will explore the landmark 1947 class action lawsuit that successfully ended de jure segregation in California schools. The event will feature:

  • Former students of the "Mexican" schools and plaintiffs involved in the lawsuit
  • Scholars and researchers
  • Filmmakers discussing the case's implications for social justice and racial equality

Key Highlights

Panel Discussion: The main program will include insights from various perspectives on the Mendez case and its lasting impact. Documentary Screening: Attendees will view a clip from a new documentary about the Mendez case, which features East Los Angeles College. Keynote Speaker: Dr. Daniel G. Solorzano, a distinguished professor from UCLA and Director of the Center for Critical Race Studies in Education, will deliver the keynote address. Special Guest: Catherine Murphy, creative director of Maestra Productions, will speak about the documentary film her company is producing on the Mendez case.
