All Day Academic ELAC Alert: Tropical Storm Hilary

East Los Angeles College is monitoring Hilary as it approaches the Los Angeles area. The safety of all college locations and team members is our top priority. The National Weather Service currently predicts the hurricane will diminish to a tropical storm when it reaches Southern California Sunday midday through Monday. A flood and tropical storm watch has been issued for parts of Los Angeles County, including Monterey Park, Southgate, and surrounding communities.

Currently we are planning for in person classes and for the college to be open on Monday. The expected rainfall will impact traffic, so please plan ahead and give yourself enough time for your commute. Please note that more accurate forecasts of the storm’s trajectory and potential impact will be available over the weekend and I plan to communicate updates by Sunday evening.

Campus Preparedness

  • Cabinet and Administrative Service teams are monitoring the storm closely and coordinating preparedness and response planning, including checking facilities for potential flooding and leaks.
  • Team practices for athletics originally scheduled to take place on Monday have beenrescheduled.

Preparation Tips

  • You may also register for the L.A. City Emergency Alert or L.A. County Alerts.
  • Be prepared for potential power outages by charging phones, laptops, and other power supply instruments. Keep a flashlight handy with available batteries.
