How to Challenge a Language Prerequisite?

FOREIGN LANGUAGE TAKEN DURING HIGH SCHOOL

(This is for students who have completed high school language courses in the U.S., but do not have ANY college credit for those classes):

Students who believe their language skills are beyond level 001(beginner level) in any of the languages, may fill out the Prerequisite/Corequisite Challenge Petition form and submit it for consideration using the following steps:

  1. Fill out the Prerequisite/Corequisite Challenge Petition. The form may be obtained directly from the Admissions & Records Office (E1-105) or download HERE.
  2. Students should include their LACCD student email, LACCD student ID #, and make sure to electronically sign the petition. Also, students SHOULD submit a copy of their unofficial high school transcripts that show which language courses they’ve passed. A petition with a typed signature will be returned to the student.
  3. The student may submit it in-person at GLCD (E3-100E) or electronically to the department assistant’s email, @email.
  4. Depending on the language requested, the department assistant will connect the student with the appropriate discipline lead and begin the challenge process.
    • This challenge exam process may include a brief verbal interview with the discipline lead and/or a timed written exam.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE TAKEN AT ANOTHER COMMUNITY COLLEGE OR HIGHER LEARNING INSTITUTION

Students may follow the steps listed above if they completed a language course(s) in another community college or higher learning institution; however, they must include a copy of their unofficial college transcripts along with the Prerequisite/Corequisite Challenge Petition. Please keep in mind that this process would only REMOVE the prerequisite, but it will not provide the students with college credit. Students will need to submit official transcripts from higher learning institutions to the Admissions & Records Office (E1-105).

FOREIGN LANGUAGE COLLEGE CREDIT | ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP)

Students who have taken the College Board’s AP Exam in a foreign language and scored a 3, 4, or 5, can enroll in a higher language level. Students may follow the steps listed above and submit a Prerequisite/Corequisite Challenge Petition along with an unofficial copy of their AP scores. The copy should show the student's name, the AP course exam, and the passing score. Please keep in mind that students will need to submit their official AP scores directly from the College Board along with the General Petition to the Admissions & Records Office (E1-105) to receive college credit.
