Program Overview

You already know some French! Terms such as RSVP (Répondez s´il vous plait), déjà vu, à la carte,rendez-vous are French! Studying French will definitely improve your English vocabulary since there are so many French words in the English language. Did you know that French is the largest donor of foreign words in English?

Did you also know that French is a highly influential language in the world since it touches so many areas of what is considered "general culture". This includes literature, art, cuisine, dance, film, fashion, science, and technology. France has won more Nobel Prizes for literature than any other country in the world and is one of the top producers of international films.

Did you know that French is spoken on five continents? Did you know that French is the official administrative, or business, language in over 30 countries? French is an administrative language of the European Union, the International Olympic Committee, and the United Nations among others. Along with English, it is the most used language in the European Commission. French is the foreign language spoken by our largest trading partner, Canada.

Studying French at East Los Angeles College

  • Students have the option of beginning their study of French on the main campus or at the South Gate Educational Center.
  • French textbooks come with web access to a wide range of activities and resources that motivate students to aim for mastery of the language and to become knowledgeable about the French culture.
  • East Los Angeles College offers an outstanding Summer Study opportunity to earn course credit in Paris during the month of July with the European Studies Association.

Course Offerings

East Los Angeles College offers beginning and intermediate, university-transferable French language courses. Our classes are supported by extensive web sites with sound and video files to help students´ perfect pronunciation modeled by native speakers from around the Francophone world.

Study Abroad

The Modern Languages Department offers students the opportunity to enrich their educational experience by studying abroad. We offer an outstanding Summer Study opportunity to earn course credit in Paris during the month of July with the European Studies Association. Credit is given for all coursework.
