ESL Guided Self-Placement

ESL Assessment

East Los Angeles College offers a new English as a Second Language (ESL) assessment process known as ESL Guided Self-Placement. The process involves completing a survey where students are asked to describe their ability to read, write and speak in English. The ESL survey consists of 9 multiple-choice questions. Students will receive a placement into one of the following Credit ESL classes:

  • E.S.L. 3A - Low Intermediate
  • E.S.L. 4A - Intermediate
  • E.S.L. 5A - High Intermediate
  • E.S.L. 6A - Low Advanced
  • E.S.L. 8 - High Advanced

Beginning-Level English Learners

Students who prefer ESL classes for beginners are not required to participate in the survey. They may enroll right away into any of the free Noncredit ESL classes (ESL 40, 41, 42 and 43), no clearance necessary. For more information, please visit the Noncredit Department (E3-100) or call (323) 415-5400.
