Journalism Department
Courses in journalism teach students writing techniques, interview skills, subject selection and story structure. To hone beginning journalism skills, students can join the Campus News website and newspaper to not only put into practice what they’ve learned, but to see their names in print for the first time. A graduate can go on to become a:
- Newspaper reporter
- Editor
- Graphic Designer
- Photojournalist
- Social Media manager
- Author
- Radio and television journalist
- Public relations professional
Journalism skills are also excellent preparation for law enforcement, lawyers and scientific writing.
Campus News has served the campus and surrounding community for more than six decades. The first issue of Campus News was published on September 19, 1945 and included headlines such“Dr. Ingalls takes over directorship of college,” “Enrollment reached 373,” and ”College hosts first assembly.“
Since then, Campus News has covered every major event relating to student issues and events in both their print and online editions, and has participated in journalism conferences and competitions throughout the U.S.
Since its inception, Campus News has received many awards from the Journalism Association of Community Colleges, including the 2015 General Excellence Award, and the Mark of Excellence Award from the Society of Professional Journalists.
To become staff members, students must enroll in and pass Journalism 101. At the end of the course, the class produces one issue of Campus News with the help of current staff members. Students who complete the course may join the newspaper staff where they write, edit and design each issue of the newspaper. Staff members also work on the online edition of the paper and manage social media accounts.
