ELAC > Student Services > The Noncredit Program

The Noncredit Program:

The NonCredit Program offers ESL, GED, Citizenship, and Vocational classes. Services include customized training, offsite offerings, as well as a comprehensive Multimedia Resource Center. The program has been designed to meet both academic and personal development goals. All of our classes are free of charge.

ESL (English as a Second Language)

The ESL Program consists of a core of four ESL levels from beginning through intermediate as well as elective offerings, such as conversation and writing. Certificates of completion are offered if the student successfully completes core sections by meeting certain criteria. The faculty is highly qualified, experienced, and trained to use a variety of methods to encourage and motivate each student to reach academic and personal goals.

GED (General Educational Development)

The program prepares students to pass the Official GED examination for the state of California. In order to help the student determine what areas they need to study, an official GED Practice Test is administered upon entering the program. The practice test consists of Writing, Social Studies, Science, Reading, and Mathematics. An orientation is then provided in which students learn their test results and determine their courses to study. Classroom instruction is effectively reinforced and complemented by lab work in the Resource Center.

Citizenship

Citizenship classes teach English and government in a fun and interactive way. Students are encouraged to attend even if they are not ready to become U. S. citizens. All are welcome. Supporting services are available for the students who want to take the citizenship examination.

Special Projects / Offsite Services

The program offers customized training and ESP (English for Specific Purpose) classes. These and other classes may also be offered off-campus at community locations.

Academic Preparation

Academic Preparation is a modular 5-week program, which has been designed to help students improve their grades in their credit classes. These courses also satisfy the requirements for GED preparation.

Tutoring

We offer tutoring services to all interested students in our NonCredit Program. Please contact the office for further information.

Resource Center (RC)

The RC is fully staffed and it provides several services, which include: computer laboratory, library, video stations, and tutoring. Popular software programs utilized are: Azar Interactive Grammar, TOEFL, Steck-Vaughn GED, Glencoe Keyboarding, and PLATO. PLATO is interactive and comprehensive program covering a wide variety of subjects including Mathematics, English, Life and Physical Science, Social Studies, and Life and Career Skills. The library collection has a variety of books, videos, and cassettes on different areas of interest.

The NonCredit Program is located in F5-201. See the campus map for the exact location. The program is open Monday to Thursday from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM and Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. For further information, contact the NonCredit Program at (323) 260-8174.
