Minimum Performance Requirements
Students will be expected to meet the minimum performance requirements in each semester of Applied Music.
Students Recitals
Applied Music students will be expected to perform on at least two student recitals each semester. You should discuss repertoire for the recital with your Private Teacher and it is your responsibility to prepare it for performance. The recital performance must not exceed seven minutes in length. PLEASE DRESS APPROPRIATELY. Your grade will be based on musicianship, poise and appearance. If your recital program requires accompaniment, it is your responsibility to secure the sheet music and provide it to the accompanist at least one week prior to your scheduled performance. Unless the piece you perform was composed without accompaniment, you may not perform without it. All student recitals are on Wednesdays at noon. Please see the Music Department Calendar link for current recital dates.
Student Recital Application Form
You must fill out a Student Recital Application Form, approved and signed by your Private Teacher, and turn it in to Dr. Nagatani at least ONE WEEK prior to the student recital date. Please make sure that you print all required information clearly and accurately. Remember, you must perform on at least TWO student recitals per semester. This form can be obtained from the Music Office or downloaded from the Forms link.
Music 181-184 Guidelines
This form is a contract between the Student and Private Teacher and lists in detail what is expected from both. Please take this form to your first lesson and make sure that you both read all conditions carefully. Both of you should sign and date it at the bottom. Make two more copies of this form, one for each of you to keep. Please submit the original to Dr. Nagatani after your first lesson. This form can be obtained from the Music Office or downloaded from the 'Forms' link.
Monthly Attendance Report Form
A monthly record of all lessons taken with your Private Teacher must be submitted. It must be signed by both of you and turned in by your teacher to Dr. Nagatani after the last lesson of each month. Copies of this two-page form are available in the Music Office or you may download it from the Forms link. Please bring this form to your teacher at your first lesson of each month.
Student Progress Report Form
Two Student Progress Reports are due during the semester. The first is due at the end of the eighth week of classes. The second is due at the end of the term no later than the last regular day of class. Reports are to be completed, signed and submitted to Dr. Nagatani or to the Music Office by your Private Teacher. However, he/she may ask you to submit them for you. It is very important that this form is turned in on time as your grade and standing in the Applied program are dependent on it. Blank forms may be picked up at the Music Office or downloaded from the Forms link.
Concert Attendance
You must attend concerts presented by all the large ensembles at East Los Angeles College. These concerts are presented near the end of the semester, and most will be held off campus due to unavailability of a performance venue due to construction projects at ELAC. Grade credit will be given for each concert you attend. As an Applied student, you will be given free admission to all concerts, and you must sign in at the door to receive grade credit for your concert attendance. You are also expected to attend all student recitals throughout the semester.
Jury Examination
All Applied Music students will be expected to perform for a Jury at the end of each semester. This is the equivalent of a Final Exam. In the jury, you will be able to demonstrate your progress and improvement in technique, musicianship and repertoire for a panel of music professors.
Each jury will be ten minutes, and will usually consist of your performing a piece of your choice, followed by one or two others at the panels request. Instrumentalists will also have to perform scales and arpeggios. All music must be memorized.
Four copies of the Jury Form must be filled out and turned in to the panel at the beginning of your Jury. Make sure that all forms are signed by your Private Teacher before turning them in. You can pick up Jury Forms at the Music Office during the last two weeks of the semester.
