“Dual enrollment has truly changed my life. Taking college courses at East Los Angeles College and Rio Hondo College has given me numerous opportunities that I know I would not have been able to get otherwise. When future employers and scholarship committees hear that I have completed 60 college units and will be receiving my Associates of Science degree this spring, they are blown away. They do not understand how a high school student could be graduating from college before graduating from high school. My answer to them is that I did not accomplish this all by myself. Without the amazing support system that I have at the Applied Technology Center and my home, I would not have been able to succeed in this amazing program. The Applied Technology Center’s staff and my family have pushed me to realize my full potential and to always keep my eye on the prize.”

“My name is Mario Ortiz. I am currently a high school senior at the Applied Technology Center. I have had the pleasure of also being a dual enrollment student with East Los Angeles College. Participating in both academic environments was an enriching experience that I received as a young Hispanic student. As I look back throughout my high school career, I give much credit to the college courses that I had previously taken because not only did they better prepare me for my classes in high school, it taught me certain life skills that I would have otherwise learned at a later age. Additionally, I saw the look of skepticism when I requested to take two college courses on top of my six-class workload and extracurricular activities. It taught me my limits and as I pushed to take three classes a semester, I reached it. Overall, I am thankful for the opportunity that has prepared me for my transition to UC Berkeley. Go Bears!”

“The experience of taking college courses at the high school level was unique and one I enjoyed. I started taking classes in my sophomore year up until late junior year. Throughout the semesters, a lot of sacrifices and challenges came along but that did not stop me. My ambition to earn a certificate of achievement on Administration of Justice with a Law emphasis along with my strong drive to reach my goals makes it all have a purpose for my passion for law. A purpose that I envision will help me with my goals: graduate from law school, pass the California Bar Exam, and work up to be a partner in a prestigious corporate law firm.”

“Child development has helped me because I’m a teen mom and I have learned new things about my kid and it has prepared me more. It has taught me new things that I honestly would have never thought. It has benefitted me in many ways like in high school and at home with my baby.”

“My name is Rosario Sarabia. This is the first course I have taken. This is an experience people should do in high school. Why? Because you learn time management and your own decision-making, I am learning things that aren’t easily accessed at any school and learning new things.”

“I have taken 3 ELAC courses - Sociology, Child Development and Communications. I started my freshman year and it has motivated me to take as many as I can to get college credit. It has also motivated me in high school because I know that I have to try my hardest and get into the college I want and pursue my career.”

“After taking an East Los Angeles College class, I learned how rigorous courses can really get compared to high school courses that we take regularly. I managed to improve my note taking skills by pushing myself to listen more and read the slides a little less when it comes to class lectures.”

“Something I’ve learned is that a rigorous course should never be taken lightly. Sociology has so much to do with the community and social class. I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of our society and how it functions. East Los Angeles College has been of great use in my current day high school class. I do recommend taking this opportunity.”
