What is equity-minded competence? According to the Center for Urban Education, the term “Equity-Mindedness” refers to “the perspective or mode of thinking exhibited by practitioners who call attention to patterns of inequity in student outcomes. These practitioners are willing to take personal and institutional responsibility for the success of their students and critically reassess their own practices. It also requires that practitioners are race-conscious and aware of the social and the historical context of exclusionary practices in American Higher Education.” Equity-minded competence is developed when we keep in mind the following Core Competencies:

  • Intrapersonal Awareness: Adopting a cultural humility approach that constantly examines how our ideas, assumptions, various identities, and values influence our a). teaching approach b). relationships/connection with students so as to build authentic caring relationships.
  • Inclusive Pedagogy: Selecting and organizing course content that is meaningful, transparent, and invites collaboration, and teaching in a way that is relevant and provides timely support to all students. 
  • Inclusive Environment: Promoting a sense of belonging by cultivating a shared-power, growth-mindset climate that focuses on students' assets and forms of capital. Engagement in interdisciplinary and global 
  • Reflective Practices: Engaging in reflective practices to critically examine racial and ethnic consequences of practices  our own ideas, cultures, assumptions, and values, and how those beliefs impact our pedagogy and interaction with others.
