CA Governor Gavin Newsom visited ELAC on August 29 to announce the expansion of the College Promise program. Assemblymember Miguel Santiago who was the original author of Assembly Bill No. 19 which gave two free years of community college to Los Angeles students also joined him. Associated Student Union President Brian Ha and College Promise recipient Jocelyn Campos spoke before the Governor and talked about how College Promise has helped them. The event was open to all students and faculty and they were treated to free tacos as well.
This program will now be expanded statewide and to qualify for free tuition, students must submit either a FAFSA or CA DREAM Act application, and cannot already receive fee waivers. They must also be first-time, full-time college students.
