ELAC TO HOLD FIRST ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS
MONTEREY PARK, CA – East Los Angeles College will be having its first ever Festival of the Arts March 21 – 23 located in Plaza of the Arts (near the Vincent Price Art Museum). This three-day festival is free of charge and open to the public. There will be a variety of different art displayed by East Los Angeles College students.
The play Visions of Boyle Heights will be performed at the festival and is an original play about the Boyle Heights neighborhood in Los Angeles. ELAC Theatre students conducted interviews with Boyle Heights community members to help develop the play. This raw material was then woven together into a single story focusing on one family of first generation Japanese and Mexican Americans from the early 1900’s to the present day. The play reflects on how Boyle Heights has changed over the years, the challenges that the community has faced, and looks into what the future may hold for the neighborhood.
On Saturday, March 23 from 10:00am to 4:00pm there will also be a screening of Academy Award-nominated Short Films-Animation, from Canada, Ireland, and the USA. This is held in partnership with Cinema Without Borders, and will feature a Q&A and panel discussion after the films. Cinema Without Borders is an online publication that is dedicated to international and independent cinema. Its goal is to create international communities of filmmakers and film students.
